    well, my first thought is a bottle of wine because really, one can never have too many. but yes, it's so ordinary.

    What about an awesome coffee table book of something (you're always bound to find something interesting in the Barnes&Noble discount book section) they'd love OR a big vase of gorgeous flowers OR an awesome set of adorable kitchen towels?

    Think aprons can be a great hostess gift! And they are SO cute! My current favorite at Anthro is the "sew basket".

    Or stationary is cute, or a bottle of your signature drink--like I love Pimm's and sometimes take that--esp if people have not tried it before. Re: stationary--if this is the first time to visit friends at a new house you could do a cute personalized stamp with their new address!
